Lawn Renovation

Almost every lawn can use a little fixing up or repairing from time to time, and fall is usually the best time to do it. Green & Clean offers a variety of renovation services for your lawn, including:

  • Core aeration for thatch control
  • Spot seeding to fill bare patches
  • Slit seeding to thicken the lawn
  • Complete renovation to rebuild your lawn from the ground up

Core Aeration

core aeration
With this service, thousands of small cores of soil 1" to 3" in length are removed from your turf. These cores “melt” back into the lawn after a few rainfalls, mixing with and helping to break down whatever thatch exists on your lawn (more than ½” can be harmful).

Core aeration not only helps to control thatch, it improves the soil structure, helps to create growth pockets for new roots and opens the way for water, air and fertilizer to reach the root zone of your lawn.

The holes created by aeration catch air, fertilizer and water. Turf roots naturally grow toward these growth pockets and thicken in the process. Aeration holes also relieve pressure from compacted soils, letting oxygen and water move more freely into the soil of the root zone. After aeration is a great time to add any other supplements that need to be spread.

Performed at least once per year, aeration significantly reduces thatch and encourages a stronger, more extensive root system for thicker, healthier turf growth. We schedule aerations for both the spring and the fall seasons.

Core Aeration Plus Overseeding

Remember that the most important element of seeding success (aside from water) is getting new seed into contact with the soil. Now, picture your lawn full of thousands of little holes and the soil from those plugs laying all over your yard. Aeration followed by overseeding puts a lot more seed into contact with the soil than just spreading seed over the top of the lawn. The plugs and the holes all catch some of the seed for a high germination rate and a thicker, healthier lawn.

Spot seeding to fill in thin areas

Perhaps you do not need to reseed the whole lawn but just have some “rough” areas or paths that get heavy traffic. We can roughen the soil in these areas and apply the proper seed blend to match your existing lawn. Call for more information on this late summer and early fall service.

Slit seeding to thicken your lawn

Slice Seeding

When we seed, it’s very important to get good seed-to-soil contact. Our slit-seeder has knives that slice through the thatch and actually open “furrows” in the soil. The same machine has tubes that feed a precise amount of seed into each furrow. It’s a lot like a farmer’s equipment for seeding fields, but sized for your yard.

Complete lawn renovation

When a lawn is full of weeds and hard-to-control grasses we generally suggest renovation. To create a brand new lawn we first treat the whole lawn with Roundup or a similar product. This treatment will eliminate all the old plants (including their roots). After the old weedy lawn begins to die, we use the slit seeder to apply clean, certified seed in two different directions to assure great coverage. If desired, we also apply a high- phosphorus starter fertilizer to help the seedlings get established quickly. This service is recommended for late summer or early fall to allow your new lawn to get better established during the cooler fall months. Call and ask for details on this service.

There are a lot of reasons why your lawn might need one or more of these renovation services. Some might be due to lack of water through the summer, unseen attacks from insects or disease, heavy foot traffic, or poor drainage. All of these problems can create the need for some repair work.

If your lawn has seen better days, we’ll be happy to provide an evaluation and consultation to determine the best seeding/renovation options for your turf.
